President Donald Trump met Elon Musk in the Oval Office to mark Musk’s departure from his government position. Musk, wearing a black outfit and a T-shirt reading “The Dogefather,” was thanked by Trump for transforming federal business operations. Musk confirmed he will step down from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Trump praised Musk for reshaping how Washington handles its workflows, highlighting the impact of Musk’s leadership. Despite Musk’s exit, his staff will continue working within the administration, ensuring ongoing influence. During his tenure, Musk removed thousands of employees from the federal workforce as part of streamlining efforts.
Musk will now shift his focus back to his business ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X. Trump acknowledged Musk’s role in driving efficiency in the federal government while signaling a smooth transition ahead.
Under Musk’s guidance, DOGE made significant cuts, including slashing budgets of several agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). This agency previously supported impoverished communities worldwide. Research from Boston University has linked these budget cuts to adverse outcomes affecting hundreds of thousands of lives globally.
In a symbolic farewell, Trump presented Musk with a gold-colored key commemorating the creation of DOGE. Trump stated that only “very special people” receive such honors, calling the key a national tribute. Musk expressed willingness to provide advice when needed, and Trump expects Musk to remain involved in some capacity.
Trump noted that Musk still aims to cut $1 trillion in government spending and expects DOGE staff to stay embedded in federal agencies. “He will likely keep watching over his baby,” Trump added, referring to Musk’s ongoing influence in federal reforms.
